Understanding why your Caller ID is being labelled as SPAM

Have you noticed that your phone number is being labelled as spam or fraudulent by some of your contacts?

This can be frustrating, especially if you are running a legitimate business and relying on phone communication to reach out to customers.

The good news is that this issue is not necessarily caused by your behaviour, but rather by third-party companies that allow end-users to label phone numbers as spam.

Most phone devices come equipped with embedded systems that filter or flag incoming calls based on information held in their databases. Several third-party companies, such as Truecaller, Nomorobo, Whoscall, Showcaller, Hiya, and more, use these databases to provide their users with caller ID and spam identification services.

These companies collect data from public complaint sources, user-generated feedback, and other sources to identify phone numbers that are commonly associated with spam or fraudulent activities.

Unfortunately, this system is not perfect and can lead to legitimate phone numbers being mistakenly flagged as spam. This is especially true if your number is in the same range as those who are using the line for non-ethical practices. The good news is that there are some steps you can take to rectify this issue.

One way to prove the legitimacy of your business is to register your end-user or company details with specific services. This way, when a call appears, these services can identify you as a legitimate business and reduce the chances of your number being labelled as spam (Truecaller, Hiya, Whoscall, Robokiller, Youmail, CallApp).

Another way is to adopt a behaviour that will prevent spam flagging, especially if you actively use the number for outbound calls that “could” be considered spam.

If your number has already been labelled as spam, you can request modification or removal from the third-party database. For instance, Hiya provides an online form where you can request the removal of your number from their spam database. (Example of Hiya HERE).

At Megacall, we understand the frustration of having your number labelled as spam, and we are always here to help.

In conclusion, if your CallerID is being labelled as spam or fraudulent, it is likely due to third-party companies that allow end-users to label phone numbers as such. You can take steps to prove the legitimacy of your business or request the removal of your number from the spam database.
